The Military Wives Association of Kenya (MWAK), on 23rd June 2023 marked the International Widows Day, with a nationwide presence geared towards bringing together widows of fallen KDF soldiers. The United Nations observes International Widows Day globally, on June 23rd, to raise awareness on the many challenges faced by widows.
This year’s theme, “Innovation and Technology for Gender Equality,” aims to highlight the role of innovative solutions and technological advancements in promoting gender equality. For military families, the event was held concurrently in twelve regions; Nairobi, Mombasa, Eldoret, Nakuru, Nanyuki, Gilgil, Machakos, Kitui, Trans Nzoia, Kisumu, Siaya and Busia counties, spearheaded by MWAK regional officials.
In Nairobi region, the event was held at Embakasi Garrison. MWAK officials, members and widows were welcomed by GS EastCom, Colonel Jackson Lesaiyo. He opened his speech by stating that widows of fallen KDF soldiers have a right to enjoy social protection and health services. He encouraged the widows to use MWAK as a platform to voice their views and embrace the theme to empower themselves technologically.
The widows shared their experiences and their triumphs amidst the challenges they face following the demise of their husbands in a bid to encourage newly bereaved widows.
MWAK Chairlady, Mrs. Aileen Ogolla, appreciated members of the Kenya Defence Forces Widows groups in all the regions for taking time to mark this special day for widows, noting that the day calls for reflection, recognition and empowerment. She reiterated that the year’s theme highlights the important role innovation and technology play in promoting the rights and wellbeing of widows around the world. She added that widows are not defined by their marital status, they are resilient individuals with dreams, skills and talents for full and equal participation in society.
In conclusion, Mrs. Ogolla mentioned that in the past two years, MWAK has conducted several widows’ empowerment programmes in conjunction with KDF Compensation and Welfare Department to address the unique challenges facing widows. She invited widows to join MWAK and make suggestions on how they can be supported to advance themselves especially within the digital space.
