Military Wives Association of Kenya today launched the MWAK/KDF Music Band Programme comprising of Dependants of KDF personnel by conducting an assessment process at Defence Forces School of Music in Langata Garisson.
The idea was birthed after interactions with the youth in KDF Sponsored Schools during mentorship programmes, identifying the need to creatively occupy their time as well as the need to nurture talents.
In her opening remarks, Chairlady Aileen Ogolla appreciated the 28 prospective students for their enthusiasm, noting that the association is keen and passionate about uplifting the youth within KDF families.
“MWAK has conducted youth empowerment programs under the mentorship pillar and is exploring different approaches such as building skills through vocational training opportunities and now nurturing talent through programmes such as this one that we are launching today.”
She further urged the prospective students to consider this a privilege and a rare opportunity. “It demands commitment, discipline and self drive during the training. There is no shortcut to mastery; consistent practice is mandatory if you would like to be as skillfull as the KDF band members.”
DEFSOM Principle Director Colonel Njagi walked them through a set of rules and expectations before undertaking the assessment. Selected candidates will commence training in the coming week. Once they gain the skill, the learners will hold concerts and eventually get the opportunity to perform during major events. It is their dream to get the opportunity to perform alongside the KDF band. Success of this first Cohort will determine future enrollment.
Other members of MWAK present were Regina Mulwa, Roseline Wesonga, Martha Kipkosgei and Beatrice Mitoko.
