    Education

    The right to education encompasses access to affordable and quality education, which encourages the retention of learners.

    As at 2021, KDF sponsored education facilities served a total of 24,996 pupils distributed across one day-care centre, three Special Needs Education (SNE) centres, 11 Early Childhood Education Education (ECDE) centres, 15 primary schools, and 14 secondary schools.

    KDF sponsored schools have the potential to become centres of educational excellence in Kenya. In fact, in the early 1990s some KDF sponsored schools were among the best in the country with state-of-the art facilities and producing top students in national examinations.

    SOME OF THE CHALLENGES FACING KDF SCHOOLS INCLUDE ;

    (i) insufficient facilities, including teaching and learning tools, which leads to overcrowding in classrooms;

    (ii) poor performance;

    (iii) Inability to meet the requirements of children with special needs;

    (iv) Truancy, indiscipline and substance abuse; and

    (v) Insufficient teacher to student ratios. Notably, most KDF sponsored schools have a very low enrolment of children from military families.
