THEME: ‘Innovation and technology for gender equality’
The Military Wives Association of Kenya honors all the widows for their resilience and courage in ensuring the continuity of their life, that of their children and the extended families. With the support of KDF through Compensation and welfare department, MWAK will mark this year’s International Widows Day in 12 regions Nairobi, Mombasa, Nanyuki, Siaya Transzoia, Kisumu, Busia, Nanyuki, Eldoret, Nakuru and Gilgil.
MWAK realizes the many challenges and burdens widows have to bear, in not only dealing with the emotional turmoil of grief and loss but also the socio-economic barriers such as stigmatization, discrimination, harmful social practices and loss of incomes. Greater efforts in supporting widows navigate through life is therefore necessary. This year’s theme, ‘Innovation and technology for gender equality’ catalyses culture and growth bringing solutions that give widows greater opportunities to thrive and move beyond their limitation in the modern world by improved communication, enhanced agriculture, businesses, health and many more.
MWAK joins in this year’s celebration recognizing the important role technology and innovation plays in enhancing women’s’ access to opportunities in male dominated fields. Currently, MWAK, hinged on technology, has reached over 1200 widows and is registering them through www.mwak.co.ke with the hope to bring together KDF widows from all regions to join in the Kenya Defence Widows and Orphans (KEDWO) network, which seeks to find relevant solutions to their issues, learn, network, grow and take up opportunities from partners of goodwill.
MWAK therefore encourages widows to embrace technology, uptake and exploit the vast opportunities that lies in technology to innovate, network, learn, and market beyond their local context to the rest of the world.
HAPPY INTERNATIONAL WIDOWS DAY TO ALL MILITARY WIDOWS.
