In a nationwide effort to promote autism awareness and inclusivity, the Military Wives Association of Kenya (MWAK), in partnership with the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), joined the global observance of World Autism Day 2025. Celebrated under the banner ‘Advancing Neurodiversity’, the commemorations spanned across key KDF regions including Nairobi, Mombasa, Eldoret, and Nakuru.
Nairobi’s main event unfolded at the Defence Forces Wellness Centre, Langata Garrison. MWAK Chairperson, Mrs. Grace Kahariri, led the event and officiated a symbolic awareness march aimed at amplifying autism understanding within the local community.
In her keynote, Mrs. Kahariri highlighted the importance of public education, acceptance, and inclusion for those on the autism spectrum. She reaffirmed MWAK’s steadfast dedication to supporting children with autism within KDF families by improving access to specialized care and education. Among notable initiatives, she cited the refurbishment of the Kahawa Special Needs Unit, with plans to replicate similar projects in other regions. She also announced ongoing efforts with the Defence Forces Technical College (DEFTEC) and the Family Group Foundation to develop a life skills curriculum for children with special needs, alongside the formation of a support group for caregivers.
Gratitude was extended to various partners—Family Group Foundation, Kingdom Bank, DEFTEC, DEFWES, KISE, and BethanyKids—whose collaboration has been instrumental in driving MWAK’s mission forward.
Colonel P. K. Tirop, Commandant of the Defence Forces Wellness Centre, echoed the call for increased advocacy and support for families affected by autism. He stressed the importance of cultivating an inclusive culture within the military and broader community.
The Directorate of Medical Services reaffirmed its commitment to accessible, responsive healthcare for neurodivergent individuals, noting progress in service delivery, including expanded speech therapy and occupational health services.
