On 11 November 2024, the Military Wives Association of Kenya (MWAK) commemorated World Orphans Day, an annual event aimed at drawing attention to the plight of orphans across the world and champion for quality lives.
The event took place simultaneously in 7 regions within various KDF bases/units that is: Eldoret, Nairobi, Nakuru, Isiolo, Nanyuki, Mombasa and Busia County which joined in for the first time.
In Nairobi Region (Lang’ata Garrison), the Commandant Colonel Kasaine Koruta, standing in for the Garrison Commander, welcomed the KDF dependents at Ulinzi Sports Complex and appreciated them for not only showing up in good number but also displaying enthusiasm towards the event.
He further lauded MWAK’s efforts in advocating for the lives of KDF dependents through various approaches like mentorship sessions, health programs, donations and education sponsorships among others.
The speech of Mrs. Grace Kahariri, MWAK Chairperson, was read by Mrs. Regina Mulwa, the leader of Kenya Defence Forces Widows and Orphans (KeDWO). She noted that the day commemorates the dependents’ resilience and perseverance to push on despite their circumstances. Mrs. Kahariri expressed her gratitude to the leadership of KeDWO for organizing the event and other programs which touch on widows and orphans.
“We, as an association are cognizant that this journey is not easy. Today creates an opportunity where we can learn, share and come up with impactful interventions that can shape your future. We are open to receiving your suggestions on how orphans can be supported to advance themselves.”
As Kenya participates in the ongoing global conflicts, the population of widows and orphans is rapidly increasing; due to this, MWAK is working in tandem with the KDF Compensation and Welfare Department (C&W) to ensure that the families of deceased soldiers live comfortable and dignified lives by attaining their goals.
Orphans across all regions were engaged in an assortment of activities among them games, team work challenges, music entertainment and motivational sessions from therapists and religious leaders.
