Military Wives Association of Kenya in conjunction with the KDF Directorate of Medical Services on 5 April 2024 held a health outreach at the Roman Catholic Church grounds, Moi Air Base.
This being the second edition of the event, MWAK opted to focus on Non Communicable Diseases (NCD) among them being mental health, cancer, diabetes and hypertension.
In her address, MWAK Chairlady Aileen Ogolla emphasized the importance of seeking early diagnosis and refraining from self medication.
” We are here today because we realize that if we are diagnosed early, our chances of recovery are higher. Let us seek advice from our medical practitioners and make use of the services rendered to us,” said the MWAK Chairlady.
On the same platform the head of MWAK Health Pillar, Effie Kinuthia encouraged the attendees to engage fully and open up to the medics and not to shy away from channelling their feedback since it’s the only way to improve future editions.
“We are running these health outreaches themed Afya Bora Ustawi Wetu across various KDF establishments. After today’s event, we will craft a report pointing out the most prevalent medical conditions so as to make our health conversations more fruitful for the families.”
Medical experts educated the attendees on mental health, nutrition, reproductive health and non communicable diseases. Later, screening was done for blood pressure,sugar levels,cancer (including PSA testing for prostrate health for men over 50 years), HIV among other conditions.
The key speaker was Dr Eva Njenga, Mmed, MBS, a well- respected and world-renowned endocrinologist
In attendance were; Base Commander MAB Brigadier Samuel Kipkorir, Chief of Compensation and Welfare DHQ Brigadier John Khaoya, Brigadier (Dr) Obillo from the Directorate of Medical Service, Senior officers, Medical Practitioners based in MAB, Service Personnel, families and MWAK members.
