BACKGROUND
About Military Wives Association of Kenya
INTRODUCTION
The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) has grown exponentially since its establishment in 1964 as a modest military outfit to one of the most formidable disciplined forces in the region today. The primary mission of KDF is to protect Kenya’s sovereignty in addition to supporting peacekeeping initiatives within and outside the country’s borders.
The current national and global security environment has necessitated an increase in the level of KDF’s operations due to emerging threats since 2011. These circumstances have seen an increase in the number of military personnel recruitment and increase in troops deployments to varied locations and duration.
As a result of these emergent developments, military personnel have become more exposed as military infrastructure become overstretched and as they are now spending longer periods away at peacekeeping locations.

Looking to Join Us?
The MWAK membership structure helps create a sense of community and solidarity with like-minded organisations. In establishing the critical needs or gaps affecting welfare of KDF families, MWAK used the Rapid Assessment approach during the visits to medical centers and all KDF sponsored schools in the 23 units, bases and formations. This gave us an understanding of where our interventions would have impact, hence the development of six focus action areas: health, mentorship, education, veteran affairs, housing and recreation.
