REFURBISHMENT OF SPECIAL NEEDS UNIT IN KAHAWA GARRISON PRIMARY SCHOOL

On 26 July 2024, a delegate of MWAK members led by Chairperson Grace Kahariri were accompanied by representatives from Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE) in a site visit at Kahawa Garrison Primary School where a special needs unit is undergoing refurbishment.

This project which commenced in June 2024 is aimed at attaining excellence in KDF’s special needs education by creating a conducive and suitable environment needed by children in the spectrum.

In line with its education pillar, MWAK has been encouraging KDF families with special needs children to come out in large numbers in order to spur positive changes for them to reach their full potential.

Prior to this visit, a section of MWAK members paid a courtesy call to KISE earlier this week to explore the possibility of a partnership that would see KISE offer some of its expertise like therapy, caregiving and additional teachers to the special education units.

KISE Director Dr Norman Kiogora, expressed his willingness to partner with MWAK in this initiative, emphasizing on how therapy and the right structure of education is imperative especially for autistic children.

“We are delighted to have been offered the opportunity. Our passion for special needs children runs deep and we get overwhelmed with gratitude when other organizations support our cause.” KISE further pledged to give any needed guidance along the way and provide regular assessment of the students in order to give correct educational intervention and instructions.

Mrs. Kahariri appreciated KISE’s enthusiasm towards the wellness of special needs children noting that this partnership will not only enable them to provide specialized learning devices but also personalize the education structure to the needs of each learner.

Once the refurbishment process has been finalized, KISE will offer occupational therapists, caregiver empowerment and train teachers on the best way to handle the special children.

MWAK is certain that the success of this project will serve as a model which will be replicated in the other KDF bases over time.
