Veteran Affairs
Veterans are individuals who have served in the military of their country and have either retired or resigned after years of honourable service. Every year, a number of military officers proceed on retirement.
The transition from military service to civilian life is a dynamic state, sometimes characterized by a period of uncertainty and disruption, after a life of strict order and command. This is often so for some ex-armed personnel regardless of rank at retirement.
KDF VETERANS ACT 2022
As such, these military veterans, after rendering important service to the Nation, to a some extent, are left to fend for themselves once they leave military service, often causing them serious social and economic problems.
Their misery is compounded if they suffer health complications arising from their service in the military.
Some of the challenges experienced by the veterans are: retirement when one is still at a productive age and still willing and able to work; lack of proper mechanisms for providing a sustainable psycho-social support system during the transition to civilian life; lack of a guaranteed healthcare support system for veterans and their families and inability by KDF to monitor and evaluate the well-being of veterans once they leave active service.
