To enhance the welfare of military families and neighboring communities, the Military Wives Association of Kenya (MWAK) under the leadership of the chairperson Mrs. Grace Kahariri, in partnership with the Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE) and the National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), conducted a comprehensive assessment outreach programme at Kenya Navy Base Mtongwe and Mtongwe Comprehensive Primary School.
The outreach brought together caregivers, parents, children, and medical specialists in a unified effort to address the unique educational and healthcare needs of children with disabilities.
Specialists carried out detailed assessments to determine appropriate interventions and tailored learning support mechanisms, while caregivers were sensitized on effective strategies for supporting children both at home and in school.
Key Services Offered during the outreach are
• Physiotherapy
• Occupational therapy
• Speech therapy
• Functional assessments
• Provision of assistive devices.
Beyond direct services, the programme provided a vital platform for early intervention, awareness creation, and advocacy on the importance of inclusive education and equitable healthcare access.
This powerful initiative illustrates how collaboration between MWAK, KISE, and NCPWD can transform access to specialized care and education for children with disabilities.
By combining medical expertise, educational assessments, and caregiver sensitization, the programme not only addressed immediate needs but also laid the groundwork for long-term inclusion and empowerment.
Efforts to expand inclusive access to education and specialized healthcare for children with disabilities continue to gain momentum through collaborative initiatives that empower families and strengthen communities.
This kind of initiative strengthens MWAK’s role as a bridge-builder connecting military families to national institutions and ensuring no child is left behind. It’s a model that will be replicated in other bases and schools to expand impact.
MWAK continues to lead in advancing inclusive education and healthcare, ensuring that every child regardless of ability has the opportunity to thrive within supportive communities
The association remains committed to championing initiatives that uplift military families and foster inclusive communities. Together, we continue to build a future where every child has the opportunity to thrive.
