The Defence Forces Technical College (DEFTEC) in Embakasi Garrison hosted interviews for shortlisted applicants seeking admission into the 5th Cohort of the Construction Skills Development and TVET on Wheels Training Programme.
The exercise brought together MWAK and its strategic partners in a coordinated effort to expand technical skills, strengthen livelihoods, and empower military families across Kenya.
The programme continues to be a cornerstone initiative, equipping beneficiaries with practical construction and technical competencies that enhance employability, entrepreneurship, and long‑term economic resilience.
Interview panelists from the Military Wives Association of Kenya (MWAK), DEFTEC, Nairobi Institute of Technology (NIT), and the Family Group Foundation convened for a structured briefing session to align on the day’s objectives.
The Commandant DEFTEC Brigadier Noor welcomed all representatives and reaffirmed the programme’s importance in improving the welfare and economic stability of military families.
Panelists highlighted the roles their organizations play in supporting the initiative with the secretary of MWAK, Mrs. Rose Ng’ang’a providing a detailed overview of the day’s workflow, emphasizing professionalism, fairness, and consistency throughout the exercise.
To ensure uniformity in candidate evaluation, Ms. Damaris Githinji from the Family Group Foundation guided the panelists through the interview assessment tool.
She clarified the scoring criteria, documentation procedures, and key indicators of candidate suitability, ensuring all ten panels were fully aligned before interviews commenced.
Shortlisted candidates assembled at the Terminus Hall, where they received a comprehensive briefing on interview expectations and the broader purpose of the programme.
This orientation helped create a supportive environment, enabling candidates to present themselves confidently and clearly.
A total of 129 candidates were interviewed by the ten panels.
Using a standardized assessment tool, panelists evaluated applicants on motivation, readiness, aptitude, and alignment with the programme’s goals.
The interviews proceeded smoothly throughout the day, with each candidate receiving adequate time and attention. The collaborative approach ensured fairness, transparency, and a holistic evaluation process.
After completing the interviews, all panels reconvened for a joint deliberation session. This collaborative review allowed panelists to compare observations, validate scores, and address any matters arising from individual panels.
Following thorough discussions, the successful candidates were identified as follows:
ICT: 20 candidates
Electrical Installation: 50 candidates
Plumbing: 50 candidates
These selections reflect the programme’s commitment to offering diverse technical pathways that meet both market demand and the aspirations of military families.
The training for the 5th Cohort will run for six months, with classes commencing from 7th September 2026.
During this period, trainees will undergo intensive hands‑on instruction, mentorship, practical assessments and industrial attachment designed to prepare them for industry‑level opportunities and self‑reliance.
The interview exercise marked another milestone in MWAK’s ongoing commitment to empowering military families through skills development and sustainable livelihood opportunities.
The strong partnership between MWAK, DEFTEC, NIT, and the Family Group Foundation ensured a well‑coordinated, fair, and impactful selection process.
With the successful candidates now identified and training set to begin, the 5th Cohort is poised to embark on a transformative journey toward technical excellence and economic empowerment.
